Speaking of Satan…”…He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44
“The battle for your soul is in your mind.” Pastor Kyle
Satan will use anything and anyone to engage you in a lie to mess with your head.
- “…you’re not a good mom.”
- “…you’re a terrible daughter.”
- “…you’re too fat to wear that.”
- “…you’re not worthy of _______________.”
Satan’s lies tempt us to take our eyes off of God’s goodness.
- We are the mom He made us to be.
- We are His loved daughter.
- We are wonderfully made by the Artist of the universe.
- We are worthy, because He made us worthy in His eyes.
Genesis 3:1-5: “Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.'” 4The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5“For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Be a Truth Seeker.
Don’t engage in a dialogue with Satan.
Eve engaged in a dialogue with Satan. Instead of ignoring him, she questioned God’s goodness. She questioned the truth. Instead of trusting God, she listened to the serpent; she was swayed by his deception. She let him get into her head. She entertained the idea that maybe God hadn’t been truthful with her. She believed the lie that she could do it better. That she could be like God.
Don’t take the bait.
Satan makes the lie look good or sound reasonable. Like, telling Eve that once she eats the fruit her eyes will be opened; she will be like God. Sounds good, right?
What if your child is having a hard time in school, making bad choices, throwing toddler tantrums in the middle of Target, then, obviously you are a bad mother. Sound reasonable? Of course not.
That is one lie Satan tells us to mess with our head. And he will use whomever or whatever he can to help fuel his lies. One of his favorite tactics is using other people to reinforce the lie. Gossip is a good example. By using others to spread gossip or say mean things about us, it makes it harder for others, and ourselves, to believe the truth. Satan is a user.
Our response to the lies is what will make or break us.
When we believe the lies we are filled with guilt, shame and unworthiness and even bitterness. We then try to hide our true selves from the world and God. Adam & Even hide from God when they realized they were naked in the Garden. (Genesis 3:8)
We might hide ourselves from God by doing good deeds, as if doing good will cover up the doing bad, or the lies we believe that make us bad. We hide our true selves from others by pretending we are someone we are not: the perfect homemaker; the tireless volunteer; the always happy, never depressed wife…you get the idea.
Remember, God finds us even after we’ve taken the bait and believed the lies.
Genesis 3:9: “Then the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
Where are you?
God looks for us. He seeks us out. If we are willing to accept, He is there. Once we say, “Here I am,” he covers and comforts us. God covers our guilt and shame, just as he did for Adam & Eve when He clothed them in the Garden after they sinned and realized they were naked. (Genesis 3:21) He was there.
He did it with Jesus’ blood on the cross too. We are covered. He said, “For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:28).
We are covered.
- The truth is we don’t need to believe Satan’s lies anymore.
- He forgave and will continue to forgive us.
- God comes after us even when we mess up.
- He is a loving Father who always has a spare room for us when we come running home after failure.
