Nestled against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Great Sand Dunes are the tallest dunes in North America. These dunes cover more than 330 square miles.
I braved the harsh wind with Alex and our friend’s daughter. We only made it to the 2nd sand dune! I really don’t know how people make it to the top of the dunes! This picture was taken late in the day, thankfully, or the sand would have been too hot to walk barefoot.

Parker walking in Medano Creek. It was late in the day, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Now, the next day was a different story. It looked more like a crowded Florida beach.

There was a forest fire all weekend in the mountains behind the dunes. It was caused by a lightning strike but the Forest Service was doing a controlled burn to rejuvenate the dead forest. We watched at night the red flames flicker in the forest. Luckily we did not smell the smoke from the fire.
